The International Castor Oil Association (ICOA) pledges membership to the Sustainable Castor Association

(MOHEGAN LAKE, NY) The International Castor Oil Association (ICOA), during its annual general meeting in Dubrovnik, voted to become the first ordinary member of the Sustainable Castor Association.

The Sustainable Castor Association was recently established as a permanent custodian of the world’s first third-party audited sustainable castor code called SuCCESS™ (Sustainable Castor Caring for Environmental and Social Standards). The association was born as a result of the Pragatiproject, a collaboration of Arkema, BASF SE, Jayant Agro-Organics, and the international civil society organization, Solidaridad.

The Pragati project, whose objective is to develop sustainable castor farming, has achieved significant results so far, including:

  • Farm yield improvement of more than 50% vs the 2016 baseline
  • 4,000 hectares of castor farming now in accordance with the SuCCESS code
  • 5,000 tons of certified sustainable castor seed produced so far
  • 2,700+ farmers certified

According to Francois Guillemet, president of ICOA, “The preliminary results of the Pragati project represent a major progress for the castor industry. The increased use of renewable castor oil and its derivatives in many applications leads to substantial savings in fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in downstream chemical production. Further, thousands of small family farmers in India can increase their income, improve their quality of life, and protect the environment by smarter use of water and crop protection products. All this makes a solid business case for commitment from ICOA to proudly join the Sustainable Castor Association, favoring the use of castor oil especially through sustainable farming.”

ICOA is a 65-year old industry trade group encouraging members to improve the agronomic conditions of castor beans, the development of new applications for castor oil and its derivatives. With 47 number of companies as members, it influences the sustainable growth, processing, trading, marketing and/or consumption of Castor oil. Originally established in support of a very simple commodity business framework, its work and vision has expanded as downstream uses for castor oil have become more sophisticated and highly demanding in their needs for sustainability, quality, and responsible production. Today, the group is comprised of business representatives from a vast array of players in the castor chain, such as processors, exporters, traders, shippers, and end users. ICOA is instrumental in supporting not only sustainability, but also guides quality specifications and testing protocols. Globally, India is the largest source for Castor oil production.
